The Camera Scenario

Below are descriptive excerpts from the screenplay and a few of the locations that are represented in the script. These locations have been recently scouted by Strata’s production team and although subject to change, they help to shape the visual concept and production design of the movie.  Please click on the colored boxes to read the excerpt.

EXT. CHICAGO RIVER - PRE-DAWN

A pair of hands load a film cartridge into a French-made Beaulieu amateur cine camera and close the lid. Fingers adjust the frame rate knob, free the winding crank handle and turn it clockwise a few rotations. It’s ready to shoot. MICHAEL MILLER, 21, aims the camera at the horizon. The sun breaks and glistens off the Chicago River as the city's majestic skyline comes into view in the distance.

EXT. WABASH ST EL - MORNING

An elevated train skates to a stop at the Wabash Street station. The train doors open and Michael exits, his camera bag slung over his shoulder.

EXT. CENTRAL CAMERA - MORNING

CAMERA TILTS DOWN onto the street below as Michael hurries past commuters down the stairs, makes his way briskly across the street toward a camera store. A large vintage neon sign hanging above the store reads: “CENTRAL CAMERA CO., SINCE 1899.”

EXT. CENTRAL CAMERA - CONTINUOUS

A single bulb lights the cash register. Behind the counter, the store’s manager, CARL HAYES, 40s, African-American, counts the cash drawer. Michael bursts through the door and begins unpacking his camera bag.

EXT. PONT ALEXANDRE III - DAY

Michael leans against the railing of the grand Pont Alexandre III in Paris, staring out over the River Seine as tourists snap photos and enjoy the view behind him. The Eiffel Tower looms in the distance.

Michael wanders up the Champs-Élysées, stops in front of a French cinema and looks up at the marquee.

Michael walks along the Left Bank of the River Seine, toward Notre Dame. A tour boat floats down the river and a little boy on the boat waves at Michael. He waves back and continues walking.

Michael walks through Luxembourg Gardens and stops in front of the palace. He looks out over the gardens as the sun sets.

EXT. ANGLIN-SUR-L'ANGLIN - DAY

Michael arrives at a bridge on the Anglin River. Across the bridge is the upper village, the ruins of a medieval castle perched on a cliff above it. Michael crosses the bridge, walks up the road into the village.

Michael slips into the shadows as Emilie approaches the cottage and knocks on the door. It cracks open and André appears in the doorway. Emile enters and the door closes behind her. Michael looks up at the sky. A blue moon shines over the castle ruins above him.

Michael arrives as the sun rises over Saint-Cirq-Lapopie in the Midi-Pyrénées region of southwestern France. He stops and looks out over the River Lot, takes his Beaulieu out of its camera bag and aims it upriver.

Michael enters the village of Roussillon in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. The afternoon sun scorches the ocre-colored hills around it.

Michael steps out of his hotel room onto the patio and looks out over the valley. The Vaucluse Mountains loom in the distance.
